My Top 5 Favorite Footnote.com Collections
I was browsing Footnote.com today and decided to write a post listing my top 5 collections on the site. While there are many documents on Footnote of interest to genealogists, I've used the following 5 and had quite a bit of success:
Revolutionary War Rolls. These are listed by state and military organization soldiers belonged to.
Revolutionary War Service Records. You can search for compiled service records of American Soldiers who served in the Army during the war.
Civil War Pensions Index. This contains index cards for pension applications of veterans who served between 1861 and 1900. What I like about this is you can find the application and certificate numbers and order the complete pension record from the National Archives. From using these index cards, I was able to find and order the voluminous pension applications of two great-great grandfathers.
The Southern Claims Commission. This collection contains southern petitions for compensation for things taken by Union troops during the Civil War. There are some very interesting and moving letters among this collection
The Matthew Brady Collection of Civil War Photographs. This is a free collection. While this collection hasn't helped me in my genealogy activities, there are some very cool photos here.
